Imagine This

Done and done!

Posted by: Tess J on: May 29, 2009

We did it, and better yet, we did it well! I am so proud of all of us for coming together and putting on such a great show. As Jenny said some of the parents were truly amazed at how enjoyable our show was, and obviously the kids loved it. Seeing those kids laughing and getting involved really made all the hard work worth it for me. I am truly excited to continue my career in children’s theatre, even though I will be on the production side, I am still looking forward to seeing reactions like that in the future!

I was thinking about what we could have changed along our playbuilding process to make our performance better, and honestly nothing big springs to mind.  Obviously things may have been a little rushed towards the end because of the prop and set creation but I think that it all part of the experience! There are always last minute things and I would rather it have been creating the sets than doing that first and learning lines last minute. So I wouldn’t change that. Then there was the issue of group cohesion but I don’t think I would have changed any of that either because in the end it really made everyone a lot closer. So I wouldnt have changed that. Probably the ONLY thing that we could have changed was to sort out the lighting a little earlier so we could practice it a little more, but in the end who cares, because nothing went wrong in either of the shows anyway!! So in summary I really would not have changed a thing.

Would you guys have changed anything if given the chance?

I agree with you Tess, I don’t think that anything needed to be changed at all. Given the time we had to do it all I think that it all came together well and we achieved what we wanted to. The kids absolutely enjoyed the experience and so did all the members of the group through the whole process. It was a great learning experience for me and I’m sure for many other members of the group. As Tarlington (1995) quotes “Playbuilding is a rich approach to drama that encompasses learning experiences in a number of areas including theatre, human behavior, presenting ideas, co-operating, thinking, research, and the persuit of excellence.”
I think that all these experiences were evident through the process and it made it such a strong and successful product in the end.
Well done everyone, I enjoyed working with you all :)

Nice wrap up Tess. Would i change anything, well this was the first time i have ever worked with a group to create and build a play for children, so everything that happen for me was a learning experience. If i could change anything in our playbuilding porcess i feel, looking back that now i would not have the knowledge and experience i have now!!

I feel we did the best we could with the time and resources we had!!!

This is an experience that will live on in my memory for a long time. The fact we provided an experience for our child audience is something i could always look back on and smile about :)

In relation to our performance, I would probably only change our lighting, as that room has terribly patched and old school lights hehe.

However I would like to revisit processes – but my comment got a little long that I made my own post about it :)

As Christopher Worthman says…

“While exploring one’s positionality reveals who one is, it also reveals the limitations of one’s perspective or that we are bounded in time and space. Thus our understanding of the world is contingent on others’ responses to us” (Worthman 2006: 29).

This playbuilding experience has, for me, been an intense and dynamic journey of discovery. In retrospect, I wouldn’t choose to go back and change anything but I have definitely learnt some things along the way that will inform how I approach group task work in the future.
